Until
2002 no one had attempted to record anything
of the history of the parish of Leverton. Research
was carried out to get the feelings of the
parishioners about recording their history,
and there was a resounding ‘yes please’!
So, some sixteen months later, and many hundreds of hours spent in research
and related activities, here is The Book of Leverton. There is something for
everyone: the general reader, the local historian, and the genealogist looking
for family names to help in their quest for relatives. There are chapters about;
the ‘old’ Leverton; The Church; Chronological entries from about
1842. The School; Farming; The years spanning both world wars; Some personal
memories of the Village, and much, much more.
The publication of the book has been possible thanks to the Local Heritage
Initiative. The LHI is administered by the Countryside Agency on behalf of
the Heritage Lottery Fund with support from the Nationwide Building Society.
To them our grateful thanks.
We, the Committee of the Leverton Local History group, while acknowledging
our amateur status, sincerely hope you enjoy the book.
