The story of Lincoln goes back
a long way - at least 2500 years. But why did
people settle in Lincoln? Well, the hilltop site
offered security as much as anything else, to
the earliest settlers because strangers could
be observed approaching from the north and protection
from the south was offered by the marshes and
The River Witham. Prehistoric men and women used
a track on top of the limestone that runs from
the River Humber to the hill on which Lincoln
stands. So a gap in the Jurassic ridge - The
Lincoln Edge - and a river were the key factors
in determining Lincoln’s position as a
settlement. A safe place then, in which to live
and a good trading place to aid prosperity.
