Richard
Underwood is 48 years old and lives in Bourne,
Lincolnshire with his wife who does not share
his passion for “silly aeroplanes”.
Currently Principal Strategic Planning & Research
Officer at Bedfordshire County Council, he
has worked in Local Government since 1973.
Previously he worked in such exotic locations
as Milton Keynes, Hemel Hempstead and Peterborough.
He started his career in his native Suffolk
and later spent four years in Sleaford. It
was here his passion for the Lancaster was
fully revived.
A town planner by accident - and by profession - he is a Corporate Member of
the Royal Town Planning Institute to boot. East Kirkby has become his unofficial
second home in the country. Thankfully, Bourne is regularly on the route of
the BBMF to and from displays so he can revel in the sight and sound of the
other Lanc too.
He is proud to be a resident of Lincolnshire but concedes that John Chatterton’s
assertion: “You’ll always be a newcomer unless you were actually
born here!” is almost certainly true. This is his first book and, almost
certainly, his last. No other task could ever hope to be anywhere near as enjoyable
and educational as this one has been. It may have been work; but it was never,
ever, hard work.
